Carlton Brass

(In association with Lakeside)

2007

Carlton breaks its long run of minor 3rds with a major 1st. As well as retaining the Soloist Prize.

Walter Ritchie and Carlton Brass are over the moon after winning the 2nd Section at the Leicester Open. Playing band number 4 they broke their long running spate of 3rd places, Butlin’s and the Area twice. Also it was great news for Steve Parker on Soprano Cornet who retained the soloist prize yet again, well done Steve see you in the club on Monday

It was with a twinge of sorrow that cornet player John Moor was unable to play with us at this contest because he had to return to Australia and Brisbane Excelsior  Band. We wish John a safe return home and hope that he will be back soon.

Taking the seat of John on the front  row we welcome Alan Ritchie, Walters son who has joined us from Thoresby.

Stannington sweep the board

Stannington band took home 1st prize and the George Slattery Memorial Cup as well as the prize and trophy for the most entertaining band. The entertainment adjudicators commented: "Looked Good…..All Round Entertainment.....The Best & Most Entertaining Band".

These prizes were received on stage by the band’s youngest member - Cornet player Becky Ball who has recently progressed from Stannington’s training band and promises to be a ‘star of the future’ for the band.

Karen Bolt, principal horn player (and member of the band since she was 11) also won her 3rd soloist prize by scooping the prize for best soloist on the day with her performance of Peter Graham’s ‘A time for Peace’ on which David Read commented : "Pleasing sound from the soloist.....I enjoyed it very much"

The band opened their 25 minute programme with Sandy Smith’s arrangement of the cornet feature ‘Valero’ this led into the second movement of Peter Graham’s Call of the Cossacks suite ‘Gypsy Dream’ which was followed with an entertaining performance of ‘Cartoon Music’ - complete with bells, whistles, hooters and squeaks! This was contrasted with Karen’s prize winning solo ‘A time for Peace’. The band then featured their talented trombone section with the timeless classic trio ‘Trombola’ and closed their programme with music from the big screen by playing a selection of music from the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. David Read finalised his comments by saying: "This a well balanced band with a good sound, well directed throughout"

Hello and Good Bye

We bid John Yarker a fond farewell and hope that he enjoys his music in pastures new. Taking over on the euphonium chair we welcome Dave Tooth. Our long standing percussionist Henry Burnet has also decided to stand down and branch out into the key board scene, Henry will be deeply missed but we are sure that we can call upon him in the future. Taking over from  Henry's is Robbie Tooth the son of Dave. Also John Moore joins the front row cornet section, John has just moved to Nottingham from Australia where he was a member of Brisbane Excelsior Band. From Walter and all the Band we say our thanks and welcome.

New BBb Bass at Carlton Brass

Advertising on 4 barsrest works wonders in a matter of a couple of weeks we have filled our trombone and BBb spots. The latest arrival to accept the position on BBb bass is Ben Hadfield.  Ben joins us from Melbourne Town Band in Derbyshire; he will be taking over from our “Flying Dutchman” Wouter Barten who is returning to Holland later in the year. From Wally and all the Band members welcome Ben.

Trombone line up now complete.

Welcome to Kris Reeder who joins us on 2nd trombone. Kristopher is a semi-professional Trombonist and studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Robert Hughes (London Symphony orchestra). He has played at the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall and Symphony Hall Birmingham to name but a few prestigious venues. Kris is in demand both as a Soloist, orchestral player, chamber musician and of course within the brass band world Kris has moved up to Nottingham University studying Law and has played with Hook Norton, Brackley and District, Stonesfield, City of Oxford and Towcester Studio bands since the age of 12. With his experience we now have a powerful complete Trombone section.

3rd place at Butlin's

For the second year running we retained our 3rd place spot at Butlin's coming third behind Kippax and Delph, all three bands were on top for and stood out from the rest of the runners.

Below is a quote from 4barsresrt.com

Carlton Brass were excellent value for their podium place. What a great sounding band they are too with a fine bass and trombone section. It was a solid and well thought out performance and on another day may have just got closer to taking the top prize.

Old Faces Return

Welcome back to Kev Bexley and Phil Daykin who rejoin us in time for Butlins and the fun that goes with it.

Wally takes the strain

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Walter Ritchie BEM has taken over the Baton (for the time being) from Tony Wilson. Tony's workload and family commitments has meant that he has had to take a backroom position for the next few month's, it also gives him more time to devote to the Lakeside Entertainment Contest in September. Walter comes to us with a wealth of experience, his talents as a band trainer and musician are second to none. His greatest asset was in bringing his former band Foss Dyke from the 4th section to the Championship section. Wally has been taking the band now for the last few rehearsals and both band and conductor are working well together. We welcome you Wally into our fold.

Battle of the Bands Contest

Yet again Tony managed to gain another two prizes, this time at The Ireland Band's Entertainment contest. Playing band number three we managed to gain second prize and the best soloist prize.

the programme was-

Stingray

2nd movement from Gordon Langford's  Sinfonietta

Georgia  - Cornet Soloist Andy Allison

Bramwyn

At the sign of the swinging cymbal

Hungarian Rhapsody No2

It was also a good day for our Training Band Band as they picked up the prize for the best lower section band not in the prizes. Well done to all and very smart you looked in your new uniforms.

Bramwyn at Denton

What a fantastic day we had on this years Whit Friday marches, we may not have won any prizes but we did manage to get to 9 playing venues. We did have a slight panic attack a couple of days before the event when Janet Bailey was taken into hospital so we were left with only one horn and no bass drum! All was not lost as Martin Donze stepped in at short notice to play bass drum, and what a fantastic job he did (Boom Boom!). John Wilson also decided to forsake  his Eb Bass and play horn (Whimp) only kiddin John. The player of the day must go to John Yarker on Euphonium, John was all on his own and played his socks off, well done John. Mention must also be made to the following players who gave up there time to play with us - John Pacey from  Harborough Band, Sue Mercer from The Ransome Band and to Paul Murphy a free lance trombonist, we thank you all for playing and we hope that you enjoyed the day as much as we did. Of course the food prize was yet again won by Alan Carlin for his efforts to demolish a hot pot and red cabage just before the march on at Denton! So no prizes but a grand day out.

See the pictures here

An influx of new  & not so new faces

Many greetings to the new players on the cornet section as the girls make a take over bid! Joining us on Cornet are Susan, Julie and Jenny so watch out guys you could be in the minority soon! Also making a come back on Euphonium is the very talented Gary Glover. From Tony and the band we welcome you.

2005

A Christmas message from Tony

Carlton Brass has had a very enjoyable and busy schedule this Christmas.

I would like to thank all members for their hard work and attendance during the build up to Christmas and the commitment given at this busy time.  We’ve had some really prestigious concerts, playing to capacity audiences who have been very appreciative. The band has put on some excellent performances at these events and we should feel proud in what we have achieved.

We are still planning to have some fun on Christmas Eve as we do our pub run in some outrageous outfits – no change there then!

Our thoughts are with Michelle, Martin and Kimberley, especially at this time.

We all miss our Hayley but she will always be with us in our hearts!

I hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year.

We look forward to 2006 with anticipation and great expectations.

MACMILLAN CONCERT

Southwell Minster

Wednesday 7th December 2005

By

Peter Jordan/Nottingham Evening Post

This sparkling charity concert compered by the Rev Howard Ketton delighted a packed Minster audience.

Hosted by an on-form Carlton Male Voice Choir and featuring the talents of Carlton Brass, conducted by Tony Wilson, and the Lace City Singers, led by Glenn Chaney, this, the fourth Macmillan concert, brought together more than 160 singers and musicians.

Carlton Brass played in rousing style and cornet player Steve Parker’s

Solo, Tender Loving Care, was brilliant.

The 60-strong male voice choir conducted by Terry Moore and accompanied by Roger Holland enriched proceedings.

Fresh from their visit to Detroit for the Sweet Adelines International

Convention, the Lace City Singers showed why they are regarded as one Britain’s finest barbershop choirs.

They dazzled generally and showed real class with Anthem from the musical Chess.

Welcome

The Band extends a warm welcome to Esther Pritchard who joins the back row. Esther has previously played with Rothwell and Flimby Saxhorn Bands. Also making a return to the back row is Dave Saddler. Chris McMullen from Swindon Pegasus is keeping his "Lip In" with us on Euph while he is at Nottingham University. And finally making a come back is "Cheeky Chappie" Jack Cross who also returns to the back row. From Tony and the Band we hope that your stay will be long and fruitful.

"HAYLEY – A Celebration of Life"

Bramcote crematorium was packed to capacity with over 200 people gathered together with family, friends and the banding community there to celebrate the “Life of Hayley” on Tuesday 11th of October 2005. Carlton Brass augmented to 35 played some of Hayley’s most loved music before the service. The service was lead by Pastor Andy Fish of Carlton who had a magic way with words and he lead the service with just the right approach capturing Hayley’s life with tender care and emotion that went to everyone’s heart. Dave Blackley Hayley’s Biology teacher told us all about her school life and some of her most guarded school secrets, this was echoed by heart rendering readings from her former class mates which brought tears of joy and sorrow to us all. The most moving parts of the service were the playing of her favourite pieces of music and the laying of single rose’s on her coffin. After the one hour celebration Carlton Brass played selections of music from –Cats, The Sound of Music, and a tear jerking rendition of John Rutter’s Pie Jesu played perfectly by Alan Tyler. The chance was also taken to perform a Swiss March by Maurice Donze who was Hayley’s great grand father; this had been expertly transcribed by Brendan Morris. The last number was “The Young Amadeus” the band was at its finest here playing with all its heart.

I now mention with pride the following players and friends of Hayley that played with Carlton Brass at the service and we extend our warm appreciation to them all….

In no particular order they are -

Sharon Newton from Hopkins Solicitors Blidworth Band

Lynden & Mell Cooper from Newstead Welfare Band

Janice & Alan Gregory from Newstead Welfare Band

Mark Gregory from Thorsby Band

John Gregory from Stocksbridge Band

Hayley will be very much missed by everyone but my personal memories of her are, how she always managed to get to the front of the bar at the Fox on a Friday night to order her Coke, they way she would collect money for the 50/50 club by saying “You owe my Mummy £2”. And finally my pants will never be the same after she managed to empty nearly a full bottle of perfume over them after this year’s area contest as she joined in the fun. Hayley you will be dearly missed by us all, BUT your sprit lives on within the Band for ever.

Wow did we have fantastic day at this years Whit Friday contests in which we managed to get round 7 contests,6 in Tameside and 1 in Saddleworth. It came as a pleasant surprise to learn that we had taken the best 2nd section slot at the Carrbrook contest. The Band won £150 and the Carrbrook Bowling Club Trophy. We would like to extend our thanks to our banding friends from Shirland Welfare Training and Hopkins Solicitors Blidworth Bands who made the day possible.

Sad Loss of Loz Briggs

After having a fantastic day at this years area contest the trip back home to the Fox & Hounds was marred by a phone call informing us of the untimely death of a former member, trombonist Lorraine Briggs. Lorraine was fondly thought of by all members of the band and will be long remembered as one its true characters. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Lorraine ’s family and friends.

Lorraine would have enjoyed our after-contest bash back at the Fox & Hounds, where we laughed about some of her old exploits.
Lorraine faced many problems in her life but we know she got great enjoyment from her time in the band.

Band Social

By our special correspondent Phil Scott

 Saturday 19th February

Humperwink in action

Carlton Brass celebrated another highly successful year by holding our annual band social event.

The "To me To you" gang

We were joined in the celebrations by members of Carlton Brass Training Band and Nottingham City Transport Band, all part of the Carlton Band Organisation.
Our friends from Ransomes Band, who helped make our recent trip to France such a success, also joined in the fun at the Phoenix Pub in Gedling.

Phil and the Training Band

The night was very special this year as we were able to honour a very important member of our organisation. Vice president Fred Straw, presented the George Slattery Memorial Cup to Gwen Wooley, assistant musical director of Carlton Brass Training Band, for her fantastic commitment to the youth element of our organisation .Gwen can be found at the Carlton Band room almost every day of the week. Apart from providing individual tuition most weekday evenings and weekends, she also runs two junior band sessions on separate nights. On top of this she is a member of the main training band (which she often conducts) and she still finds time to sit on the back row with Nottingham City Transport band twice a week.

Gwen and Fred

A highly enjoyable night was had by all band members, family and supporters with good food, copious amounts of drink and some very dodgy karaoke performances led by our very own "Humperwink" and joined by the "To Me To You Gang" (thank goodness we are more tuneful on the contest stage). Then it was Raffle time! Ask Jo Riseley about that one !

Jo Riseley before the Raffle !

Returning to the theme of educating our youngsters, principle cornet Alan Tyler, who reached his 60th last year, was finally deemed to be of a suitable age to join our elder statesmen and founding fathers - the septuagenarian trio of Fred Straw, Frank Knowles and Ken Dunkin (aka the last of the summer wine), in a lesson of how to hold a proper bandsman's celebration. Not only is Alan now a former member of "Men O' Brass" but is now a fully fledged member of "Men O' Glass".

"Men O Glass" in Action !!

Ear plugs PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The evening rounded off a great 2004 for Carlton Brass with promotion to the second section, a successful overseas visit, and numerous trophies on the contest stage. It also helped kick off what is expected to be an equally successful 2005, which started in fine style by them being recently crowned the Butlins National Mineworkers second section champions.

Back at the Fox

Wow! and I mean Wow, what a fantastic day we had. Starting at some unearthly hour of the morning we left a cold and frosty Carlton for Skeggy. Steve our contest sec had left earlier to attend the draw and phoned the draw to us as we arrived on site. After warming up with hot drinks and breakfast it was great to see so many friends at the venue. Being drawn number 11 gave us all chance to listen to some bands in the other sections as well as in ours. As playing time neared we entered the control area to sign in. Some of the players had concerns that we did not have a rehearsal or warm up before we took to the stage. This was all put to one side once we started playing. From the opening note to the final one we gave it our all. Not a note perfect performance but one that we were all pleased with especially Tony Wilson. So with all the kit packed away it was off to the bar and some fun. With the results being held at 8pm this meant that we would hear them on the way back home. Shortly after 8 Hayley had the phone call that we were all waiting for, and when the result came that band number 11 had won, the bus erupted into a mad "Mayhem". Back at Carlton it was “Dump the kit and head for The Fox”. Shortly after 10 Steve arrived with the “Swag” (We hope that the speed camera’s were turned off!) The photo and the remarks say the rest. So now for NEMBBA and Variations for Brass. We have some new players signing for us and details will be announced very soon.Watch this space!!!!
