Walter became interested in music during his time at Shawland Academy in Glasgow, where he played trumpet in the School Orchestra. Walter then joined the Foss Dyke band as their Musical Director and together they went from the Forth section to the Championship section including the newly formed First section. He stayed with the band until 2005 when after 21 years he resigned from that position. Walter is National Chairman of the NABBC and is President of No3 Area.
